Humans are animals…but we don’t often think of ourselves like that. How are we the same as other animals? How are we different?
 
Overwhelming amounts of technology certainly make up a large part of the difference.
I've yet to see the dolphins launch a satellite :P

I think what separates us from the animals is our sense of compassion. Example: an animal would have no problem killing another animal. Most humans would feel guilty if they killed another human. Well except murderers. :P

From an alien bent on destruction's point of view, there is no vital difference between us and any other life form on this planet.
To give a little more recent pop culture reference: Man of Steel.
Terraforming the Earth and wiping out all humans in the process did not seem all that bad to Zod compared to letting his race die.
