My senior friend Rosie from the nursing home passed away this afternoon. Rosie thought I was her daughter and would call me Catherine (not my name). I would call her Mama Rosie. Rosie had been in the hospital with pneumonia. Last night before I left shift, one of the floor nurses told me Rosie was doing poorly and they didn't think she'd make it through the night. I stopped up to her room and she was sleeping. I kissed her on her cheek and said: "It's me Catherine. I love you Mama Rosie." She didn't respond. I hope she heard me.
The saddest part was her family lived only 45 minutes away from the nursing home and never once came to visit her. I would take Rosie out once a week. It was our "ritual" to eat lunch and then hit the dollar store. I would tell her to buy whatever she wanted. She always bought things for herself and little "trinket" gifts for the other seniors at the nursing home. Oh, what laughs and good times we had. I will miss her dearly.
Rest in peace now Mama Rosie
