If you got to design a new instrument, what would you create and what would it sound like?

I like string instruments (violin, piano) but also some flute tones (not all), so, perhaps something that could do both. Certainly no percussion, I'm not a fan of loud banging.

What about those cactus tubes where all the needles are inside? I always thought those were cool.
