Ignore trolls

It is really difficult to ignore trolls.
I belong to a site that is not really moderated. It's a really large (mainly news) site. Anyway, my best friend and I both belong and we just talk around them. Don't really pay attention. If we are both discussing something and a troll comes in with a stupid post, we just pretend it's not there and keep talking.
Answering the trolls--whether giving them an argument or just acknowledging their existance--is just giving them the reaction they want.

we just put them on total ignore.
Some people think ignoring the trolls means to say things like I'm not talking to you or did you hear a troll just then
That just shows the troll they got a reaction.

I hate when a troll says something that really erks my nerves.. I just want to chew them out and really give them a piece of my mind.... But then I just focus on the tv for a couple minutes and cool off.
I will admit that I couldnt resist the temptation a few times.

When you can't rely on your powers or tattling on them to the staff, the best way to deal with a troll is to ignore them.

I think you had something that would've been worth a siggy at the very least, and that is so true.
The Silent Treatment. (TST) Works best. Hardest part is ignoring the troll, but deep down it will affect the troll worst than you know. Although, most people have trouble ignoring them. I've always applied this moral on forums, but also in real life. I shun forum trolls as well as real life trolls. (Called another word)

I haven't had to deal with many trolls in the 19 years ive been running my forum..
I mostly had to deal with them when I ran my brother's forum and I had a reputation for being the most laid back and nicest admin.. but also the toughest since I had hundreds of bans under my name from the trolls.
If it is just stupid comments then they'll be subject to 3 strikes..
If it is content like NSFW links and malware.. or is an underaged kid being an asshole etc. then they will be banned immediately.. but these are also because they are liabilities..

Not sure ...the post you quoted was from 2009 and it's currently 2023, I cant remember.
Thats a long time! This one is only 14 years old (well it will be in September).
