In the dark ages and middle ages, everything happened in the name of God. They looted in the name of God, they killed in the name of God, they went to war in the name of God, they subjugated people in the name of God. Doesn't this make God an oppressor?

No. That's people doing whatever they wanted to do and putting God's name to it. Then when stuff goes wrong the blame game begins.

I don't believe in the existence of deities, but I do know those people were just using religion as an excuse to hurt and rob others for self gain. I know people who presently shit on others and hide behind their religion, like that's going to excuse them of their immoral actions.

No it makes the people doing it the oppressor, use god a crutch and an excuse to do bad things
