inactive moderators?

Oh right because if someone is going through some traumatic or hard times, they would run to their computers and let everyone know whats going on in their life.
They would at least make an attempt (say when they have a spare five minutes, or just before going to bed).

If its for some reason, such as a car accident and were in hospital for months, well then yea, that'sa different story.

Well you never know.. Jumping straight to warning them without even knowing whats going on and then saying they should have the decency to explain makes you look like an uncaring / unfeeling person who nobody would want to work for. Demoting them would probably be doing them a favor.

... Just saying.

I would first send them a PM to ask whats going on.. THEN proceed from there.

I guess I didn't explain myself clearly... I am in the same boat as you now.
Give them one warning. Tell them clearly that their lack of activity is unacceptable and next time they slack off, they will be demoted and replaced.

But then admins just demote without even pming/IMing the staff member in question.

I've gotten demoted though just because I didn't visit or lost interest. I don't like pming admins and such saying I quit. Because I'm not wanting to be a part of high school drama.
Telling the admin that you resign does not involve you in high school drama.

Its better to let them know you are no longer interested in being a mod there instead of just deciding to stop visiting one day. Leaving people wondering where you went and if you are okay or not.

When I ran my forum back in the day I would deal with inactive moderators differently based on why they were inactive.

I had a few moderators who were in university so when it came to exam time they would give me a heads up that they would be more busy than usual and not able to post. In that case I gave them the time they needed to study and take their exams. I would generally ask them how long they would be less active for just so I knew when I should check in.

Now if I had a moderator who was being inactive and I didn't know the reason I would reach out and see what's going on. If there was something new in their life like a job, death in the family etc. Then I would make a decision based on why they were away from the forum. If I found it to be a valid reason for not being so active I would ask them to get back active as soon as they are able to and ready to. If their reason was just because they lost motivation or they just didn't really care to post as much I would ask them if they were still up for the responsibilities as a staff member. If they said yes I would re-inform them of what is expected of a staff member on the forum and if they didn't want to continue to be staff that was also fine.

But yeah, that's usually how I dealt with inactive members. Sometimes there is a good reason and sometimes they've just moved on to another forum or have stopped going on forums all together.
