Also known as: "Internet Relay Chat"
A long time ago, when the internet was still mostly text based, the Internet Relay Chat was HUGE.
I never ran a channel, but I frequented several that others that I did know ran, kinda like I do with forums now..... And I enjoyed most of what happened on them.
I was reminded of the IRC in another thread, and so I went looking.
It is still there. There are thousands of channels still in use. Although the numbers are smaller than at its peak, it is still out there, some browsers still have an IRC client built into them (a couple will run it in a tab that is only active when open), or you can get a stand alone client.
One of the main drivers of all this is https://libera.chat/ with more information and clients and such.
