Is Custom Theme required......?

No, I think a good skin is better, plus having the option of light or dark skins on your forum.

I'd say no but it does help in creating your own identity if your skin is unique to your board but it's not necessary.

No, content is required.

Themes are the first thing people see, but if they're interested enough, they'll look deeper for content.

I think themes can be pre-made templates customized to look like one million dollars. If you have the budget for a custom theme and REALLY want to be the only site out there with that theme, custom is for you.

But I go with pre-made templates and customize them to my liking.

Why spend 1-300 + dollars on a skin when you can get a few banners/buttons/post indicators/etc for 20-50 dollars?

Looks and content are both equally important. You can't have one without the other.

Looks are what draws someone in and content keeps them there.

If you only have good looks then you will draw lots in but they won't stick around and if you only have good content then no one will come because you never drew them in to what you had in the first place because of the poor looks.

I honestly found that most pre mades at least for Invisionfree and Zetaboards are ok at best. There really isn't a lot out there that's decent that's a pre made which is why many strive to get a custom one made for them.

Actually, one can go on without the other. Look at the vBulletin.org and .com - the ugliest themes around and people stay because content is there.

And me, I don't use Open Source scripts, I use IP.Board. The premium templates are good.

And ZetaBoards suck. It's for amateurs.

No, as long as the theme looks decent, I don't think a custom theme is required. It can help though.
