Hmmm...good question.
First off, here are the justifications for the income tax as currently understood:
--16th Amendment to the United States Constitution

The Sixteenth Amendment (Amendment XVI) to the United States Constitution allows the Congress to levy an income tax without apportioning it among the states or basing it on the United States Census.

When the states ratified the 16th Amdt., it overturned the then-current case law on the subject, notably Pollock v. Farmers Loan & Trust Company, an 1895 case which had declared the 1894 Income Tax Act as an unconstitutional violation of the Constitution's Apportionment Clause in regards to taxation. Current case law is predicated on the 2006 Murphy decision (Murphy v. IRS, D.C. Circuit Ct. of Appeals), which reaffirmed the income tax's constitutionality.

As to whether it helps or hurts the economy, that pretty much depends on where the statutory rates are at present; generally, the higher the rate, the less revenue the government gets back (contrary to basic economic theory, ironically)....conversely, in most cases, the lower the rate, the higher amt. of revenue the government receives.

Yes it is a absolute scam. It is part of the reason why we have so much waste and endless welfare programs. If we went to some kind of flat tax and back to a gold standard this would be one of the biggest ways to get a out of control government back in check.

Then if you do end up getting money at the end of the year, its your spent money anyways.

If you owe, they just mooch and steal more of your working money while people on assistance are stealing all the credits and take 200 when pass go.
