Is social media making us less social?

I'm very introverted so I prefer to text or post messages on social media rather than calling people. However when I'm out with my wife or with friends I never like using my phone because I think it's rude to continue to look at your phone when you're out hanging with someone.

I do to, I tell the people I am with to put theirs away sometimes but then the conversation is awkward afterwards so sometimes I don't bother saying anything. I'll just people watch everyone else in the restaurant instead. :P

YES! Everyone is always on their phones. Go to a restaurant and you'll see tons of couples on their phones and not even talking to each other.

Its gotten to where you can't walk up and ask a woman out in public without them thinking you're a creeper. After my divorce, I used Tinder and online dating services.

How did you do with that?

Pretty well. It's how I met my girlfriend. It makes it easier to meet people. I used Tinder and Plenty of Fish during the Covid mandated lock down. Back in the day, you could meet women on Myspace.

I feel social media is indeed making people less social IRL. You can communicate from all over the world to whomever you want using various tech devices. People keep in touch easier by doing this instead of meeting up in public. People pick and choose their friend circle and often connect and communicate with them online. Of course, if you want to attend activities in public it kind of requires you to be social IRL. But, just for general socializing, I think many people are attached to social networking, text messages, message boards, etc.

...and even when people do meet up IRL they are on their phones the whole time scrolling social media instead of enjoying the moment with a friend.

I recently went to my grandmother's house and we chatted for about an hour and then the rest of the time we played on our phones. I guess people run out of things to talk about IRL.

I guess thats true, back in the day we'd just watch tv after running out of things to talk about.

I dunno, without social media I would be even less social.
