Last year I was very upset that my dog (Louie) was going to pass away due to a cancer tumor. I had a person say It's only a dog. Why get so upset over a dog? Have you ever had a similiar remark made to you about one of your pets? If so, how did you react?

Argh, I hate that kind of thing. I've had people do that many times to me... It comes from the belief that humans are above all other animals, which is kind of selfish. This originates from multiple religions, especially the idea that animals (other than humans) lack souls.

I wouldn't really blame the person if they were raised to think that way. But if they weren't, then it means they're probably a selfish/inconsiderate person (the kind that throws rocks at cats in a dumpster when they're kids).

I've had people tell me I'm insane for counting humans as animals... But I live in a very close-minded town, so you know.

Sorry about Louie.

People like that really make me want to hit them. They'll never understand until they get a dog

We just had to put our old dog down. And it was a very difficult thing to both decide that it had to be done, and then to drive her up to the vet to have it done.

At 14 years old she had a good long life and truly was a member of our family.

But yes, I understand some of that point of view, it IS just a dog, and some people do become overly sentimental toward animals even to where it becomes unhealthy for them and the animal. Such as with hoarding (where they have a house with 200 cats in it), which usually starts with just wanting to take care of strays because they feel sorry for them.

To be honest about it, I worry more about people who have no emotional attachment to animals, because then you wonder how they actually feel about the people in their lives.

But a reasonable level of feelings toward a pet is healthy and good for all involved. And on the other hand, once in awhile you hear about people who lost their home because they skipped mortgage payments to pay for tens of thousands of dollars for medical treatment for a pet that will likely only live to be... 14 or so at best.

Somewhere in there, you have to draw the line and make the statement... it is just a [blank].

to someone who cares about their pet it is never 'just a dog' or 'cat'...........it is part of the family

and if someone had said that to me whenever i have been greiving about the loss of a pet i would have probably given them a right mouthful back.....and like doc said....it makes you wonder how they feel about humans in thier lives

but having said that...i am an animal lover......i could never ever work for the RSPCA.....i would be sacked on my first day for punching someone who had been abusive towards a pet
