Which was part of what made kayfabe such an integral part of wrestling; once you stepped inside the ring you were fair game and that included the refs.
It was part of the willing suspension of disbelief between wrestlers, promoters and the audience - the audience accepts the things that happens while the wrestlers, etc., put on a show for them. Everyone knows its' not legit, Doc, but its' treated as such for the sake of entertainment and as long as that line isn't breached, everyone enjoys the show. I know; there's a difference between amateur wrestling and what we see in professional wrestling; no one is saying anything different.
My only objection would be that by the time you get to the Olympic level.... you ARE a professional.
That is what you do for a living, your rent is paid by some Voodoo practitioner through a series of glad-handers and the guy that sells former fleet vehicles on that informercial with the Ride of the Valkyries in the background, you haven't paid for your own lunch in years, and you don't have any idea who made your hotel reservations for an out of town meet.
No, he doesn't wear KISS makeup into the ring, and he doesn't have a paid cheerleader in body paint working the crowd, but he is a Professional none the less.
Yeah, the only thing missing being an actual signed contract with cash.
