LONDON (Dec. 14) -- A London magistrate set bail at $380,000 for Julian Assange today, but the WikiLeaks founder remained in custody pending a possible appeal by authorities in Sweden, where he faces sex crimes charges.

The Swedish prosecutors had two hours to file their appeal of the bail ruling. If they filed the appeal, Assange could be held for 48 more hours -- the time it could take to hear the appeal.

If that appeal fails and Assange is released, the anti-secrecy campaigner will have to obey a strict set of bail conditions. His lawyers have agreed to find him a permanent U.K. address, and he will wear electronic tags and accept curfew and travel restrictions.

Assange, 39, was denied bail at a court hearing last week, after a district judge ruled that he was at risk of fleeing the country.

The WikiLeaks founder had been held in British police custody for the past week in connection with an arrest warrant for sex crimes issued by Swedish authorities.

$380,000.00?!? I've seen accused murderers get less; that's pretty ridiculous, thinking he's a flight risk, after he actually turned himself in...

If he actually tried fleeing from authorities, then I can see that being a pretty decent amount, as not everyone is able to afford that much, but since he turned himself in willingly, then that's actually pretty ridiculous.
