Julia Gillard has become Australia's first female Prime Minister after Kevin Rudd stood down as Labor Party leader.

'The next Labor prime minister and the first female prime minister of this country will be Julia Gillard,' caucus returning officer Michael Forshaw told reporters after emerging from a party room meeting.

'Wayne Swan will be elected the next deputy prime minister.'

Mr Rudd had spoken to caucus, but Mr Forshaw did not want to canvass the content of his speech.

I was quite shocked Rudd stepped down, he did a great job IMO. Hopefully this helps. Anything to keep Abbot from being PM.

Kind of. Kevin Rudd's popularity was going down, and obviously he didn't want to keep it going down and letting Abbot (He's a horrible excuse for a prime-minister, he's pretty much a redneck, old fashioned, thinks women should stay at home, thinks the pill should be banned, couldn't care less about making this country move ahead of others) so he decided to step down and hopefully boost Labors popularity, good move imo.
