In your opinion, what should a forum do to keep its member base logging in and participating?

Keep the community amused with numerous activities, and keep refreshing the community with new and interesting people.

I think anyone looking for ideas on this should have a

look at this forum. If anyone is not satisfied with what

you offer here, then they are 'very' hard to please.

i must be hard to please then...............i can often log in, find 3 pages of threads with new posts, and am lucky if i find 2 or 3 to add my comments to......i think i am more used to a different kind of forum than Off Topix but i still return cos there are some good people here...............but i will be honest, i very often wonder why i bother

Just curious as to what you mean by a different kind of forum.

That's the spirit!

To me, this forum has everything that could possibly

be added, apart from a live chat room. In addition to

the topics, there are competitions, the shop, the arcade

and the lottery. You also get rewarded with WB's for

posting and other activity awards. I can't imagine what

else the staff here could possibly do to improve it.

Sometimes I do come on and find there are not really

any new topics that I personally feel I can make a

decent reply to, but then I just see if I can contribute

a new topic.

It needs to look good, work right, and be interesting. All three of these are things the staff must do, or else the site will fail.

That's a no-brainer, but at some point it falls on the member base to carry the ball to keep things going.

One person does not a forum make.

Quite so Jay, if members just won't post and help to keep the topics going

then it makes no difference how good the forum looks or how much the

Admins do.

This is why I think the Off Topix Bucks and other awards are such a good idea

here, they not only reward members for their efforts but also give us something

to aim for.

One sure fire way to lose members is for the Admin to promote somebody to Moderator, then allow them to go off on a crusade with their new found power to delete posts and lock threads on a mission to clean up the forum.

Right now I'm considering deleting my account on another forum because a new mod has decided they are the final arbitrator of content.

I agree with you Doc and it's happened to me before. Unfortunately for me, before I could ask for my account to be deleted, the mod decided to give me a permanent ban. All because the mod was power hungry and didn't like me to begin with. Why? Because I had the nerve to stick up for myself and ask the why me? question. Now a year or so later, they sent me an email asking me to please come back. It will be a cold day in hell before that ever happens! Same Admin, same mods and a dying forum. Why the hell would I want to go back there!

Some folk do get power crazy with a bit of promotion, seem to think

they know better than the Admins. I wouldn't be keen on hanging around

either.
