When would this even happen in the real world? I for the life of me do not see how an innocent person's death would save lives. I know I wouldn't go through with it because saving a dozen lives at the expense of your humanity doesn't seem worth it to me.

I know this'll seem like a silly reply, but I wanted to give you an example. Ever seen the film Mission Impossible 3?

At the beginning, the captured woman agent has a explosive charge implanted into her brain. When they rescue her, she still has this charge in her head, and they believe that if it explodes, it will blow up them, and the helicopter they're in, carrying several passengers.

She's innocent. But they believe that, in order to save themselves (and the other 4 people on board the helicopter), they need to kill her before her brain activity has the chance to activate the charge.

It's 3:30am (almost) so I'm still trying to think of a more realistic scenario... But yeah, there's one.
