How long does a battery in a laptop usually last? Ive never owned one myself.

Do you mean the functional time after it has been unplugged from an outlet or total lifespan from the purchase of the unit until it becomes a candidate for recycling?
both

I've never had a NEW laptop, so I have no idea.

I'm happy if my laptop's battery lasts long enough to shut the machine down when the power goes out. Which happens all too often here.

As for it's lifespan, the refurb I just bought has a battery that's essentially junk now, a FULL charge is only good for about ten minutes, but a 'new' battery costs more than I paid for the computer. So what I've got is what I've got.

Now my wife's brand new, out of the box, with reciept from the store fancy HP machine with all the bells and whistles will run for about four hours with her playing games online without being plugged in.

I don't have a laptop, but I have an iPad which is well, fairly close. Usually get around 9 - 11 hours on it depending how I am using it.

Mine used to get 6 hours. It's down to about three now. Which is plenty for anything I need!

Depends on what I'm doing. When you're just surfing the web or using word it lasts about 3-4 hours with mine. But if I watch a movie or play a game it's down to 1-2 hours.
