LGBT group told it cannot use ‘gay’ domain after failing ‘gay test’

A community group aiming to promote online gay and transgender communities has been told it cannot use the new .gay domain… because it is not gay enough.

Dotgay LLC wanted to snap up the domain for use by LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community groups.

But its plans were scuppered when ICANN – the powers that be in charge of the world’s domain names – said the group failed to prove it was gay enough to use it.

Dotgay LLC has been campaigning for years to be allowed to establish an online gay community using the domain and has the backing of 200 LGBT organisations worldwide.

However, it failed an ICANN test designed to examine whether a community is suitable enough to be granted ownership of a domain, scoring ten out of 16 and falling four short of the 14 points required to pass and win the domain.

Thoughts?

Don't really think we can judge considering nobody really knows how ICANN conduct their suitability tests...

Why would they want .gay as a domain?

Talkstory time.

When .xxx came out I was sent a real live Snail Mail letter from the registrar people giving me 'first dibs' to change my adult site from .com to .xxx

I wrote back and cheerfully declined the offer, and explained it thusly.

"It is much easier for those nannies who have an interest in blocking internet activity of others, and those who are so inclined to limit free speech as well, to restrict access to everything with a specific suffix, such as the new top level domain, than it is to selectively block sites under the larger all inclusive .com umbrella."

So, I ask again, why would anyone want to put their site on ".gay"?
