At least 34 vehicles crashed on the northbound carriageway of the M5 near Taunton, causing several explosions.
Police confirmed that some people had tragically lost their lives amid fears that up to 16 people had been killed in the horrific accident, described as one of the ââ¬Åworst traffic accidentsââ¬Â in recent memory.
On Saturday police said that at least seven people have been killed and at least 51 are suffering injuries. Witnesses said heavy fog and wet weather had caused ââ¬Åhorrendousââ¬Â driving conditions, prior to the accident just before 8.30pm.
At least 20 cars and six heavy goods lorries were involved in the crash, described as ââ¬Åmore like a scene from Afghanistanââ¬Â, near the exit to Junction 25, police said. Several were engulfed in flames.
This is the worst road traffic collision anyone can remember,ââ¬Â said Paul Slaven, of Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.
