Mandatory Voting

Great debaters you are.

No, I don't think it should.

What if you feel there is no best option? Forcing people to vote will cause misleading results too.

Hell no. In fact, you should show at least slight knowledge of major participants' policies before being allowed to vote.

It's the future of your country, not a damn popularity contest.

Why someone wouldn't exercise their constitutional right to vote is beyond me.

Basically someone is asking your opinion-they may not take your opinion, but it was asked for.

That's always the first thing I ask someone who is complaining about the government. Did you vote? If they say, no, I always tell them that election day was when their opinion was solicited, not now. And usually walk off.

Indeed. Say everyone being forced to vote (not those who were going to vote regardless because they wanted to) all picked Nebulous Mc Cool just because his name had the word cool in it. Then he ended up being an idiot who caused more problems than anything.

I agree, I dont think you should vote for the sake of it, you should make an informed choice, and if you don't know about your choices, either learn and then vote, after you have made an informed decision, or dont vote.

In Australia, it's mandatory to vote. When you're 17, you sign up for the electoral roll. When you're 18, you can vote. If you don't, you will be fined if you don't provide a legitimate reason. This works so well because of our system of voting, which is preferential, not first past the post, which doesn't mean that the elected has a majority.

I think that the UK, US, Canada etc should have mandatory voting with the preferential voting system. It doesn't matter if people provide donkey votes, because it takes a lot of them to change the outcome. Just my thoughts.

Haha. Well whilst I believe that everybody should vote, You have to know who/what you are voting for. No point making someone vote as they'll just put a cross in any old box without actually knowing what they are voting in.

I don't think it should be mandatory, but I do think there should be some kind of intelligence test..Some of the people that vote aren't capable of stringing two intelligent sentences together, and they can decide the fate of our country.

You should vote, because it's your responsibility and right as a citizen to do so. If you don't like either candidate, it don't matter, because one of them is going to win the election, so you best pick someone or don't complain when things are looking bad because you wouldn't vote. It gets me upset when people complain about the Bush or Obama administration and they didn't vote.
