Newly-released documents have emerged suggesting Marilyn Monroe was under investigation by government officials in the years leading up to her death over concerns about her communist-leaning acquaintances.

Files obtained by the Associated Press through the Freedom of Information Act indicate Federal Bureau of Investigation chiefs were monitoring the Some Like It Hot star from 1955 - after she confessed to a desire to visit Russia.

The papers also suggest Monroe's therapist and interior designer were troubled by the tragic beauty's connection to radical political activist Frederick Vanderbilt Field, who she she frequently visited in Mexico.

Field was one of the main targets of Senator Joseph McCarthy communist 'witch hunt' era.

An excerpt from the new report reads, This situation caused considerable dismay among Miss Monroe's entourage and also among the (American Communist Group in Mexico).

What do you think? Was Marilyn a member of the communist party?

Very sad picture. Forbidden love yet they couldn't help the feelings they shared.

Think about the times.

Under Senator McCarthy and J Edgar Hoover, EVERYBODY was suspected of either being a Communist, or a sympathizer, or at very least, not fervent enough in their hatred and suspicion of the red menace.

If you were successful in a profession or trade, it was because you were a Communist, if you failed- same answer.

They investigated everybody of note, and a lot of people who were just simply people. Which eventually led to the entire matter being discredited. Although some of the lives they ruined were never made right and those who lost home and fortune found themselves still out in the cold.

Since MM was a notable Hollywood figure (pun intended), of course she would have been investigated. It would have been remarkable had she not been.

In the background material I have read on her, she was basically Apolitical and really didn't have much of an opinion either way on most of it.

Not exactly.

Chaplin was denied re-entry after taking a trip to the UK in 1952.

It was when on the boat travelling with his family to the London premiere of Limelight that Chaplin learned that his re-entry pass to the United States had been rescinded based on allegations regarding his morals and politics.
