(The Guardian) Maryland votes to legalize recreational marijuana
Maryland voters green-lighted a constitutional amendment to legalize recreational marijuana for adults over 21.

The vote puts Maryland among the 19 states, and District of Columbia, that have legalized adult-use cannabis, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Voters in four other states – including conservative strongholds such as Arkansas, Missouri, North Dakota and South Dakota – are considering ballot measures that would legalize adult-use marijuana during Tuesday’s midterm election.

The constitutional amendment in Maryland does not mean that adults can simply go into a shop and lawfully buy marijuana. This measure effectively means that Maryland’s state legislators can now establish the legal marijuana industry in this state. The industry could start “as soon as” 1 July, according to the newspaper. The vote favoring adult-use cannabis will also put into effect some legislation that was approved during the 2022 state legislative session.

Under this legislation, penalties for cannabis possession will be lowered; for possession of up to 2.5oz of marijuana, the penalty is now a civil citation rather than a criminal charge. And, the legislative change sets up a process through which people can expunge prior marijuana possession convictions.

The vote also means that adults 21 and over can legally raise up to two marijuana plants at their homes starting 1 July. Each household can have a maximum of four plants, “which must be grown securely and out of public view,” the Sun reported.

Good for them!

Almost every state that’s legalized pot in democrat controlled states/cities has had a huge spike in robberies/rapes/shootings. Problem with the left is they don’t like convicting criminal activity and innocent people pay for it. No problem with letting people decide what to put in their bodies but the people who take advantage of it or abuse it need to pay and lately they don’t.

First, welcome back!

Second, you're wrong....
Conclusion
--With the current research, it is suggested that legalization of marijuana and subsequent opening of dispensaries have little to no adverse effects on crime rates, specifically in the long-term. Wu and colleagues (2020) found that property crimes decreased following Colorado legalization in 2012. In Washington, property crime, larceny, and violent crime rates dropped, while aggravated assault saw no change. Lu and associates (2021) saw no long-term changes to crime rates within Colorado or Washington following legalization of marijuana. Although there was a statistically significant increase in property crimes in Colorado immediately following legalization, they were suggested to be driven by an increase in larceny that occurred prior to legalization. In Washington, there was a statistically significant increase in property crimes, burglary and aggravated assault, but only in the short-term. No long-term increases were reported. Finally, after examination of five medicinal dispensaries in Washington, D.C., Zakrzewski and colleagues (2020) reported no evidence of an increase in crime following the opening of four of them. One location experienced an increase in robberies and larceny, but the authors noted this change was initiated prior to its opening and may have been influenced by expansion of nearby commercial properties.

Nope, every state under democrat control like Colorado has had a rise in homelessness and all the crimes associated with it.

But Democrats aren’t going to shit on their billion dollar mother load and ruin it with more police and paying for more people in jail from the crimes they commit.

Quote:
A 2012 paper in the Journal of Interpersonal Violence, examining a federal survey of more than 9,000 adolescents, found that marijuana use was associated with a doubling of domestic violence in the U.S. A 2017 paper in the journal Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology, examining drivers of violence among 6,000 British and Chinese men, found that drug use was linked to a fivefold increase in violence, and the drug used was nearly always cannabis.

Before states legalized recreational cannabis, advocates predicted that legalization would let police focus on hardened criminals rather than on marijuana smokers, and thus reduce violent crime. Some advocates even claim that legalization has reduced violent crime: In a 2017 speech calling for federal legalization, Sen. Cory Booker (D, NJ) said that “these states are seeing decreases in violent crime.”

But Mr. Booker is wrong. The first four states to legalize marijuana for recreational use were Colorado and Washington in 2014 and Alaska and Oregon in 2015. Combined, those four states had about 450 murders and 30,300 aggravated assaults in 2013. In 2017, they had almost 620 murders and 38,000 aggravated assaults—an increase far greater than the national average.

Unrelated; those problems were already there.

No they were enhanced. It’s like saying we had crime already so giving out guns to criminals isn’t going to increase crime

And what I find concerning is as I’m driving across the city daily is the amount of people driving while stunned. How do you know you ask? The stuff they are growing these days penetrates everything with that smile. Haven’t looked it up but I bet states like Florida are having increase in crashes. But unlike other states you go to jail for a long time and you don’t get a license for a long time.
