Australia's prime ministerial candidates have been forced to move their one and only election debate - because of TV reality hit MasterChef.

The debate is traditionally shown at 1930 on the first Sunday after the election is called.

But the final of cooking show MasterChef is due to air at the same time, and up to four million Australians are expected to watch it.

The debate has now been moved forward by an hour, to 1830, to avoid a clash.

LOL, our election was back in late August and it was totally lacklustre. There were a whole lot of reasons that Masterchef would be of more interest than the political debate. The two main reasons: I think this was the Masterchef final after about 12 weeks of lead up and this election campaign had been the most scripted in Australia's history. Traditionally our politicians got amongst the people and just winged it. This was not allowed to happen in this election with even the impromptu moments being scripted (much like US politics) and full of spin. Then there was that whole Labur leadership spill thing, causing an elected PM to be toppled just before the election. I think Australians became a whole lot more cynical about ploitcs and politicians as a result. Something I feel is happening in all countries.

So it would seem. Loads of things are more interesting than a bunch of suits lying to one another after all

Too bad it's important.

Yes, too bad indeed. But look at the election results - a hung parliament for Australia where the major parties were wooing the 3 independants for 2 weeks before a a government could be formed and we ended up with what will ultimately be an unworkable solution. I believe that much the same thing happened recently in the UK. The major political parties are starting to look a little homogenous and for the first time ever I had no clear idea who to vote for.

Pretty much the same thing happened here. No one wanted to cooperate so it took ages to set up a new government after the previous one quit.
