Would you donate your unused corpse for research?

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A shipment of 18 human heads held up by customs officials at O'Hare International Airport was bound for a cremation service in the Chicago area after its use in medical research abroad.

A spokeswoman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, Mary Paleologos, said Tuesday that the heads were originally sent from Illinois to Italy for medical research and were returned to the area for disposal as part of the agreement.

Everybody here is ‘Oh my gosh, you got a box of heads' and everybody thinks that it's unheard of, Bell said. It is a potentially legitimate medical shipment. We've seen it at various ports in the nation.

Paul Dudek with the Anatomical Gift Association of Illinois says the shipping of body parts or cadavers is more commonplace than you'd think.

Last week we did send out ten brains to the University of Texas in Austin and we received confirmation this morning that they were received, Dudek says.[/background]
