I've seen that and done that...I've already mentioned the latter, so no need to rehash that...on the other hand, years ago, when I was a forum mod over at NewsOnF1, one of the other forum members had an epic meltdown, ironically in reference to the very section I was mod over.
Long story short: White NOF1 was a Formula-1 related motorsports forum, there were a lot of us there (myself included) who like discussing non-F1 related items and so, early on, a North American Motorsports section was created (w/yours truly as the forum mod there) where we could discuss those items outside of the F1 arena. Well...the member in question (Sgd was the guy's name, as I recall) didn't like the fact that an F1 forum would deign itself - his words - to allow non-F1 items around and thus, decided to go on an epic, multi-thread flame war w/myself and two of the forum's admins over it...
Suffice it to say, Sgd eventually found himself perma-banned but not before going out in one big flaming ball of Russian glory...
Oooohhhhhh, plenty of times, especially when you're on the administrative side, it gets a little worse. But I've seen it on both sides and several times. If you frequent forums a lot, it's kind of hard to miss. They will happen eventually.
Only one example comes to mind, Doc: over on the Alternate History Discussion Board a few years ago, they had a moderator who, in his zeal to clean up the board, deleted a crap-ton of threads for - depending on who you ask over there - apparently no good reason.
