Do you have a manual for your moderators which outlines all their duties and explains what to do in particular situations?

We don't. Like Nebulous, mainly it's just using your common sense, probably referring to the rules if you have to, that kind of thing. And I'm talking of referring to the rules as in if you don't know what to do or whatever.

Basically summed it up. However, I do believe it's important to have a set of procedures for disciplining members based on the severity of their actions. And, whenever you're unsure about what action to take, ask the admin.

With the right staff, guidelines are basically common sense as previously stated.

Nah. If need me, I just talk to them personally via IM or other means. Also, I make sure they know they may ask me questions any time.

Yes, and I think it's somewhat crucial for having well-behaved mods that do the job right.

Most of it is common sense stuff and being a moderator means having good judgment to make decisions without needing someone to tell you what you need to do and when so it's not something I ever had on any of the boards I ran.

On a site i just restarted i have a very strict policy for both members and staff just because i know what wont work this time around

When I ran my own forum I did have a manual for all of the different staff that outlined what was expected of them and what they can expect from me as the administrator.

I found it really helped the staff have a good understanding of the kind of forum and atmosphere I wanted for my forum. It also helped us all focus on the main goals and we were on the same page about forum rules.
