I've posted this before. And I'll post it again. But now seemed a good time to remind everybody that it exists.

and why

That's it.

That's just about all you see.

For, give or take, EIGHT HOURS!

The drive from Tucson, Arizona, to Las Vegas, Nevada, takes approximately eight hours when travelling in a vehicle whose top speed is forty-five miles per hour. In Desert Bus, an unreleased video game from 1995 conceived by the American illusionists and entertainers Penn Jillette and Teller, players must complete that journey in real time. Finishing a single leg of the trip requires considerable stamina and concentration in the face of arch boredom: the vehicle constantly lists to the right, so players cannot take their hands off the virtual wheel; swerving from the road will cause the bus’s engine to stall, forcing the player to be towed back to the beginning. The game cannot be paused. The bus carries no virtual passengers to add human interest, and there is no traffic to negotiate. The only scenery is the odd sand-pocked rock or road sign. Players earn a single point for each eight-hour trip completed between the two cities, making a Desert Bus high score perhaps the most costly in gaming.

Van Humbeck, unconscious on the couch, had just contributed to what was then a Desert Bus world record of five points.

Should I be upset or relieved? :P

Further testing aborted. Access denied. Java plug-in required. Please download and install another piece of software you lived perfectly fine without until today in order to be able to play this amazing work of art. Thank you and have a nice day.

Sincerely,

You most likely have Java plug-in installed. This game apparently requires it in order to play. :)

I should really install it myself on all of my operating systems that support it. Microsoft Silverlight too. :unsure2:

Yes, I have the Java plug-in by default.

Okay, so I installed Java on my Windows 7 partition; both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. When I tried to play the game, Java blocked it, claiming it to be a security risk. Then I went to Java control panel, discovered that the authors of Java seem to be a bit paranoid and have gone overboard with the security measures. It's impossible to disable security, but can only choose between high and very high security levels. Great.

Finally I had to add the site to the exceptions list by manually typing the full URL (copy / pasting doesn't work), only to have Java block the game again, but this time asked me for my permission to run it, instead of making a decision for me.

Aaaaaargh!

:P

Finally, when I broke through all the security barriers and started playing the game, I drove the bus a little bit, tried steering it and stopped, all to get a feeling for the controls, but for some mysterious reason, couldn't get it running again. Damn thing simply wouldn't move anymore, so I quit.

Yay. :P

Haha I forgot this was a mini game on a unreleased Sega CD game. Someone added it to their Sonic 1 hack in the past as a joke. I don't really consider it a standalone game since it's part of a bigger one though. :P

You played it?

I've never played this version, just the one added to the Sonic 1 hack. xD There's another bad game similar to this one on the Genesis called Crazy Bus and honestly I think it's worse than this. xD

Lol I could not sit through that for long.

And the worst part about it has to be the music for me. xD The gameplay sucks, but dear god my ears! Dx Trust me when I say the Sega Genesis has an awesome soundchip, just listen to any of the Sonic soundtracks or Streets of Rage.

Yes the music is horrible on that game!

Love classic Sonic music too. 🎶
