I currently have MyBB and I'm thinking of switching to phpBB however I'm not 100% sure if I really want to do that..

In your opinion which one is best and why?

Well, its like the choice depend upon what you want to it! If its custopmising power, then phpBB is the hest option, because the software comes with 1000s of new new styles created each day with an ever expanding base of lots of customisations and features just to make sure that you forum has everything that you want including social networking codes. However if you want more user end easiness, it would be myBB. Personally I join only forums with phpBB, Xenforo and IPB because I love these three.

i feel kind of really strange with myBB because most of the styles have that typical 'myBBish' touch and I hate that, Use phpBB only if you know coding or if you are ready to learn, because things can really get tough on that end!

I prefer Zetaboards over all, but out of those two I like phpbb better.

I'm always going to recommend phpBB over MyBB - I could go on for ages on the advantages but the bottom line is simple. phpBB is more widely used, more widely developed for, more widely designed for, and more widely translated for. The possibilities are endless.

phpBB.

I have no experience with MyBB, but I did use phpbb for a few years. Its a nice software from the user's end, but there is more work than necessary for the admin (updating the forums / installing mods (lots of manual editing of files) and too many fatal errors)

Personally I found myBB to be very user-friendly especially in the ACP, but overall I think phpbb is the better software.

Having worked with MyBB for years and years, and PHPBB since 2006 and phpBB admittingly PHPBB has a lot more functionality, permissions wise but I think MyBB is free and ALOT easier to work with.

I will always be a keen supporter for MyBB and so will be for many more years to come.

What can you do with the permissions on phpBB that you cannot do with MyBB? :|

Well there are certain things you can do in phpBB where you can't in MyBB, founder permission for example, it can and can't be given for users on phpBB, However on MyBB, you have to promote users to complete administror usergroup, unless you're using a plugin for that.
"View Your Posts" it's faster than the typical searching system in User profiles, Where it shows topics you made and you replied to which MyBB Can't have.
The only bad thing with phpBB is installing MODS, you need to work on them, overall i recommend phpBB.

verall i recommend phpBB.
Having extensive experience in both, I am leaning more towards MyBB myself. This software has been a breeze to work with. I had lots of headaches on phpBB.

@Nebulous the permissions system on the MyBB System is much much easier to do however arguably it does have it's limitations and so does phpBB. Also, permissions allow for all sorts of things, most importantly myBB has lot's of good working plugins so does phpBB but maybe not as good as MyBB. Another thing, myBB is a free developed program, in comparison to phpBB phpbb does have its paid developers, but ITS FAR MORE COMPLICATED!

@FTON maybe suggest that at mybb.com? Another thing is that I agree I would recommend for the ones who have done the community forum thing before to have phpBB and then tailor it to their community but for the beginner and also for Off Topix.net I would recommend MyBB.

Would explain a little bit more but I have no more time :(,

Kind Regards,
The Very End.

I prefer vBulletin above everything else, but given what the topic asks, I prefer myBB.

Paid Software wise: Go with IPB
MyBB is the best free software out there in my opinion. There are a few lesser known softwares that I know can compete however.

Seeing that Off Topix has switched to MyBB. I can honestly say that I didn't notice, and wouldn't have probably noticed for a long time, hadn't someone else pointed it out to me. I'm not as much of a stickler for those kinds of things as I used to be.
