A man dressed as a clown bearing a striking resemblance to the notorious film monster Pennywise is spooking residents by posing late at night around a town and waving at passers-by.

The figure has been spotted in full clown attire around Northampton - and one woman claimed he offered to paint her windowsills after knocking on her front door, despite having no equipment on him.

There is no explanation for the appearances by the clown - who bears a striking resemblance to the demonic character played by British actor Tim Curry in the 1990 horror film Stephen King’s It.

Should've posted this yesterday when first knowing about it at college (when a classmate looked this story up), but this is beyond strange. It was claimed a hoax until proven to be real. Creepy...

A man dressed as a clown who has been pictured around Northampton became an online phenomenon over the weekend.

The clown has his own Facebook page and the hashtag #northamptonclown was briefly trending on Twitter on Sunday night following sightings of him around the town.

The story began on Friday when the local newspaper reported sightings of two teenagers dressed as clowns who were offering their services as painters and decorators around the Kingsley area.

Since then, one of the 'clowns' appears to have gone solo, posting pictures of himself on Facebook around the town, quickly prompting a huge response.

TV star Alan Carr, who is from the town, has tweeted his disbelief at the story and the official X-Factor Twitter account has also commented.

Just a teenager playing a prank.

Ah, I see. Well, I'm pretty sure he's creeped out a number of people there.
