On a message board, posting something irrelevant on a really old topic to bring it to the top of the list topics. name comes from the fact that you are bringing it back from the dead, thus Necro.
The act of posting in a forum thread that is too old to matter any more, or has served it's purpose.

Ever been on a forum where, if a member replies to an old topic, a staff member will come along eventually to lock the topic and warn the member for necroposting?

What are your thoughts on necroposting?

Do you think its okay to bump up old topics on a forum or is that a bad thing?

If they think members shouldn't post in those topics....ergo why not close them to begin with?

^ My thought exactly as well. Old threads should be locked or even trashed if they don't want members bumping or posting in them.

Well I am a culprit of posting in really old topics, but I always post something relevent. I hate it when people lock old topics.

If it's a relevant comment, and not just "I agree" or something, I don't mind it.

I bump up old topics all the time. No big deal.

I suppose it would make sense if someone replied to an old announcement topic, for example an announcement about "We're One Month Old!" when the forum is now several years old. A reply to that thread is unnecessary. But discussion topics are fair game.

The problem with bumping up old topics is that some people do it just to up their post count. I've seen that happen on several forums (not so much here). I don't see any point in leaving treads open especially if they are years old.

I rather prefer it to having twenty topics about the same thing.

I think we have several multiples of the same topic (or slight variations) here. But there is new people here to discuss those old topics so its fine I guess. :P

Didn't we merge like five counting threads at some point? :P

Yes! Our forum games forum was a joke. Now it seems slightly better. We should delete all the posts in there and start over. :halo2:

Don't do that Nebulous, and if you do then might as well delete the forum games altogether... :P

Anyway, a forum is a forum, the point is to post in threads, why would anyone care if someone posts in a old thread? So people are only allowed to post in recent topics? I don't think so... I'll post in any topic I want... :P
I was joking about the deleting thing...

But some us would rather talk like real people, instead of just posting the next <insert blank> into a pointless thread that requires little thought process.

Multiple threads on the same topic aren't a bad thing. In existing older topics the tone of the discussion is already set and the new posters will react to posts already made. A lot of the time that's pointless because the member might not be active anymore. Also, if you start with a completely new thread with new people it will become a different discussion which is always interesting.

So no, I'm not pro necroposting. But not allowing people to do it or even giving people warnings for doing so is completely retarded.

Very well said!

I will for the life of me never get why anyone is so bothered by necroposting. If you don't want people necroposting then you better start posting enough new topics so they don't start digging for something to post in or start becoming accepting of people necroposting on your forum. It's really that simple. When you can necropost by posting into topics on the FIRST page then what exactly does the staff team of such a board expect people to do?

I agree. Why get mad at the member for doing something they are able to do. If they don't want replies to old topics, they should all be locked after a certain period of inactivity. Maybe there is even mods/plug-ins for that. But if a board implemented that, I'm sure it would be a turn off to most people. Especially if they want to update their own topics but can't.

Necroposting on old threads is fine if you have something helpful or relevant to the thread you're replying. On a forum I was back in 2011, it was allowed for interview threads or those which had <= 4 months of being inactive.

When someone decides to go on a necroposting spree, it kind of gets overwhelming for the rest of us. A couple here and there is more my style.
