Papua New Guinea: At least 15 dead after major rioting and looting

A state of emergency has been declared in Papua New Guinea's capital after at least 15 people were killed in rioting.

More than 1,000 troops are on standby "to step in wherever necessary", Prime Minister James Marape said on Thursday.

Shops and cars were torched and supermarkets looted after police went on strike on Wednesday over a pay cut the authorities say was a mistake.

The unrest follows wider tensions in the Pacific Island nation over rising costs and high unemployment.

"Breaking the law does not achieve certain outcomes," Mr Marape said in a national address. He announced the state of emergency in Port Moresby would last for 14 days.

While most of the violence had been curbed by Wednesday evening, after soldiers were deployed and police resumed duty, the prime minister acknowledged that the situation was "still tense".

The Port Moresby General Hospital confirmed eight deaths in the capital, while another seven people were reported to have died in the city of Lae, PNG's second largest.

The absence of police encouraged people from the capital's outskirts to ransack shops and cause wider destruction, locals told the BBC.

"We have seen unprecedented level of strife in our city, something that has never happened before in the history of our city and our country," National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop said in a radio address on Wednesday, according to a Reuters news agency report.

I always liked this defunding the police concept. After all if you laid off 10% of a police force obviously 10% of criminals would go straight. :funny:

*sighs* And I once supported the concept...

Once upon a time....

I was a Precinct Committeeman for the Democratic Party.

However, the same thing happened to me that happened to him......

I've always understood that defunding the police means inadvertently promoting the greater evil which are criminals and their agendas. If you've ever watched "The Dark Knight", you'll understand that some people just want to set things on fire and watch the chaos.

If they really defunded the police then they are fucking idiots for doing so.

But the "defund the police" only means "fund mental health services" so that the police doesn't go door to door killing the very people they are supposed to be checking up on. Its a shame that a lot of people aren't smart enough to look into things beyond the slogan.

I mean not only do the cops get the most funding, but they also get militarized weapons and equipment as well..

And yet the fucking cowards stood there with their dicks in their hands as the Uvalde children and teachers got slaughtered.. and then prevented one of their own from trying to save his wife and to this day they still taunt and terrorize the victims families of the massacre and prevent them under threat of deportation or worse if they speak out.

I understood that they were scared in that moment, but they then went on to terrify the victims in this.. and prevented them from speaking out.. so I truly wonder if they were scared, or if this was their own way of curtailing what they believe to be an undesirable demographic.
