A new SpongeBob SquarePants film is underway for late 2014, says The Hollywood Reporter today, with the film being targeted to launch an increased slate of animation fare from Paramount Pictures.

The announcement comes just after this past weekend's Academy Awards broadcast, during which Paramount's Rango brought home the gold for Best Animated Feature.

The SpongeBob SquarePants television series, meanwhile, continues more than a decade of popularity on Nickelodeon, starring the voice talents Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Rodger Bumpass, Carolyn Lawrence, Clancy Brown and Mr. Lawrence. A 2004 film, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, also starred the celebrity voices of Scarlett Johansson, Alec Baldwin, Jeffrey Tambor and David Hasselhoff.

In the past Spongebob was a very clever cartoon. It was such a unique cartoon. It incorporate some silly humor for kids but also had subtle mature humor that adults enjoyed. I often find myself now understanding the humor that was over my head as a kid.

Spongebob: Patrick your genius is showing

Patrick: Where? (covers crotch)

LOL

Now the new episodes totally changed. Albeit, they even have more refined production than ever before. But all of it is just slapstick humor, not like the old episodes. The jokes aren't as clever, the episodes aren't as memorable, and the cast voices overall have become more annoying than anything else.

Spongebob these days is rubbish. Used to like it but enough is enough.
