Naked intruder chased from Vancouver home by shovel-wielding senior, police say

A 72-year-old Vancouver woman used a shovel to chase a naked intruder from her home Tuesday night, according to local police. The man broke into the home near Cambie Street and West 41st Avenue by "smashing a window with a pointed metal rod," the Vancouver Police Department said in a post on social media Wednesday.

In an email to CTV News, police confirmed the incident happened around 9:30 p.m. The resident "ran out of bed, grabbed a shovel and chased the combative man from her house as he swung the rod at her," police said.

VPD officers responded to the scene and found that the resident had "cornered the suspect in his vehicle," according to the post, which indicates that the man remains in custody and has been charged.

Balraj Singh Rahal has been charged with breaking and entering and assault with a weapon, police said in their email.

Online court records for the case indicate Rahal is scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing Wednesday afternoon.

Asked for an explanation of why the suspect had a vehicle nearby, police said the motive for the break-in is not yet known.

"Mental health could be a factor as the two don’t know each other," said VPD spokesperson Const. Tania Visintin, in the email.

Bullets hidden in a diaper discovered at TSA checkpoint

TSA officers found 17 bullets wrapped in an “otherwise clean” baby diaper on Wednesday inside a passenger’s bag at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, the agency said in a news release. The hidden 9mm ammunition was discovered after a male passenger’s carry-on bag triggered an alarm in a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint’s X-ray machine.

In its news release, the TSA referred to the discovery as a “new definition of ‘dirty diaper,’” and added that “apparently this guy needs a bullet-proof plan for packing his carry-on bag before heading to the airport for his next flight.”

The passenger, an Arkansas resident, initially said he didn’t know how the disposable diaper filled with bullets got into his bag, the agency said. Then he suggested that his girlfriend must have put it there.

Port Authority Police were notified, the TSA said, and the man was cited for unlawful possession of the ammunition.

The Port Authority confirmed a criminal summons for unlawful possession of ammunition was issued to the 20-year-old passenger.

Massachusetts police apologize after officer searched a middle school for LGBTQ book

Police in western Massachusetts apologized Thursday after an officer was sent to a middle school to search for a copy of “Gender Queer: A Memoir” by Maia Kobabe, following a complaint.

On December 8, a plainclothes officer was escorted into a classroom at W.E.B. Dubois Regional Middle School toward the end of the school day to search for the book, Great Barrington Police Chief Paul Storti said in a statement sent to CNN.

“After a brief conversation with the teacher, the officer was advised that the book in question was not there and could not be accounted for at that time,” the statement said.

“As the Chief of Police for the Great Barrington Police Department, I apologize to anyone who was negatively effected by our involvement at the W.E.B. Dubois Middle School on December 8, 2023,” Storti said.

Police said they had received a complaint that day from someone “who witnessed what they perceived to be concerning illustrations” in a book given to students by a teacher at the middle school.

The person, who authorities did not identify, shared a photo of an illustration that depicted animated characters performing sexual acts on each other, police said.

School officials and police later determined the illustration was part of Maia Kobabe’s “Gender Queer: A Memoir,” Storti told CNN. The graphic memoir examines the non-binary author’s journey with identity, and it has been one of the most banned or challenged books from school libraries in recent years.

California wastewater to be recycled into tap water, according to new regulations

In California, toilet or shower wastewater will no longer just be dumped into the Pacific Ocean or used for farmland. Now, it’ll be recycled into drinking water.

California’s Water Resources Control Board will introduce Direct Potable Reuse, a program designed to pump recycled water into the public drinking water system.

The board approved new regulations in a unanimous vote on Tuesday, making California the second state after Colorado to recycle wastewater into drinking water.

Krikey! what's this world coming to?

A government can do whatever it wants despite the will of the people. If a government decided it's people were going to eat Soylent Green the people would have to because their leaders would make it the only thing available.

Russian wife shared bed with husband’s mummified corpse for 4 years, performed occult rituals

A Russian mother-of-four slept with the mummified corpse of her husband for nearly four years – and performed occult rituals inspired by an ancient Egyptian god, police said.

The woman, identified only as 50-year-old Svetlana, shared a bed with her husband Vladimir’s desiccated remains and had forbidden her children from telling anyone about him on pain of being shipped off to an orphanage or a mental health facility, according to reporting by the news site 78.ru.

The 49-year-old husband collapsed and died after a domestic dispute in December 2020, during which the wife reportedly yelled at the man and wished him death.
