The NFL (National Football League) said that they will Start testing out a new plan that will utilize 8 referees instead of the current seven referees in the 2014 preseason games. The eighth official will be positioned in the backfield. The NFL has used seven referee crews to call the games since 1978. They hope that missed calls will be cut down during game time by adding an extra referee on the football field.

While this new method will be tested out throughout the preseason schedule, there is still plenty of work to get done before we will see eight officials calling regular season NFL games.

8 pairs of eyes are better than 7? Seems like it wont make a huge difference.

That's my thinking on the matter as well. Adding an 8th referee will not make a huge difference at all. it's just a waste of time and another bad idea.
