LOS ANGELES (CBSDC/AP) — Nintendo isn’t allowing gamers to play as gay in an upcoming life simulator game.

The publisher of such gaming franchises as “The Legend of Zelda” and “Mario Bros.” said Tuesday it wouldn’t bow to pressure to allow players to engage in romantic activities with characters of the same sex in English editions of “Tomodachi Life.” This follows a social media campaign launched by fans last month seeking virtual equality for the game’s characters, which are modeled after real people.

“Nintendo never intended to make any form of social commentary with the launch of ‘Tomodachi Life,’” Nintendo of America Inc. said in a statement. “The relationship options in the game represent a playful alternate world rather than a real-life simulation. We hope that all of our fans will see that ‘Tomodachi Life’ was intended to be a whimsical and quirky game, and that we were absolutely not trying to provide social commentary.”

I'd say it's like real life. Lots of gay people pretend to be straight. You can just imagine your straight player is still in the closet or in denial if you want to.

It is a little offputting, but at its core, Tomodachi is a kids game, and Nintendo is predominantly a kids company. And as we all know, "the gay" is a horrible thing that kids shouldn't be subjected to.

Can't say I really care. They're not exactly obliged to include things and it's not like I'm going to play it anyway.

Nonetheless, the Sims has allowed if from its inception.

It's their company, they can choose to do whatever they want. Anyone who says otherwise is a hypocrite. People whine about freedom of speech and the freedom to be yourself but then when someone does something they don't approve of they start petitioning to change it. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for gay people living their lives the way they want to, I just don't think they should care whether Mario and Luigi have homosexual tendencies.
