New Yorkers’ beloved foam takeout and delivery food containers will soon be products of a bygone era.

Mayor de Blasio — finishing off an initiative begun by his predecessor — will announce a ban on the environmentally unfriendly material Thursday, according to The New York Times.

The ban will start July 1 and cover foam packing peanuts as well as plastic foam cups and takeout containers.

City Hall declined to comment when contacted by the Daily News. But a former official for Mayor Bloomberg gave the administration a big pat on the back.

“They made the right decision, grounded in the science. It doesn't biodegrade, can’t be recycled and should be phased out — rapidly,” said Cas Holloway, former deputy mayor for operations, who helped conceive the plan and led the effort to implement it.

The City Council passed a bill in 2013 allowing the mayor to ban the foam if the sanitation commissioner determines it’s not recyclable.

Thoughts?

I don't see why it matters. We have other ways of carrying food around that uses materials that are biodegradable. It's just a small change they'll have to get used to, like how they banned plastic bags here in Portland. You either use paper ones or reusable--that's it. Outside of Portland, it's a little different in some places. You can still get plastic bags, but honestly I prefer the paper ones.

Hmmm :|

I suppose the only way to end waste and pollution is to not have to-go anything. Eat / drink there at the restaurant on their dishes. Wouldn't that be inconvenient?

I agree foam containers of any kind should be phased out. Apparently, where I live, the Mayor and Town Council agree as well. There are no foam containers being used at all.
