Well today, I was in accounting and my teacher asked me some question (I don't remember what is was) but somehow we managed to get in a dispute about what I'm doing next year. She thought I was going to go to university, so when I told her what I really was going to do, she was shocked.... yea, like everyone wants to go uni - not.

Anyway, I explained to her that I was going to get a full time job and leave school as I have no need to get be there anyway and eventually join the Police. She tried to tell me I needed to stay at school and get university entrance. When I insisted that I'm not going, so began to play the what if game, saying what if you broken leg or a brain tumor(?!) or something that stops you form joining? I said then I'll get a job in a communications center. She continued to play the what if game this time asking after I told her that I need laser eye surgery what if that goes wrong? and I kept on answering her. She then proceeded to exclaim you have an answer for everything, don't you?

I told her at that point that I was told that if I want something badly enough, I'll eventually get it. And that's the way it is and she unexpectedly agreed. There are only two people that can change what I want to do. One, the police themselves, and two, me. No-one else. I'm not going to let her change my mind and my plan to achieve my dream...

Sorry if that made no sense, but I just needed to rant.

It made a lot of sense Kas. I feel that your teacher overstepped her bounds and she had no right to do that. I agree with you that if you want something bad enough then you can make it happen. It's not easy to follow your dream but nobody has the right to take that dream away from you. Good for you Kas and I know one day your dream will come true.

It's one thing to offer advice, but what your teacher did is pushing it a bit too far.

Personally I do agree with your teacher that you should continue in your studies, but I agree with the others that she crossed the line.

I forgot to mention that my accounting teacher also happens to be the deputy principal of the school.

The topic title of this thread is amusing.

If you teacher did not care, she would have not said anything to you. She'd just not comment on your aspirations. Take it as a compliment instead of getting all insulted.

I think it was she did was uncalled for. She just assumed that everyone in my year was going to uni and that was it. In her defense she doesn't know my situation and how I've learnt that you have to live each day like it's your last - and IMO I don't want to waste it by spending unnecessary time at uni when I can be out there living my dream.

You're right she should have just minded her own business instead of telling you what her opinion of the right thing to do was. How horrible of a woman she must be. She should be fired immediately.

I'm not saying she shouldn't give any advice, but the fact of the matter is, she didn't. She questioned my intentions and did her best to annoy the shit out of me. If I were her, I would have been supportive. I don't do much in school anyway as I've gotten tried and bored of it.

No offense but you seem to be coming off a bit childish in this thread.

Not everyone in life is going to be supportive of your decisions. They are not out of line or uncalled for because of it. They are entitled to their opinion just as much as you are entitled to do whatever job you want to do when you get out of school.

She failed to conduct herself in a professional manner at any time during the discussion. Her role as a teacher is to offer advice to students and assist them with what they want to achieve in life. She failed to accomplish that too.

A teacher is not supposed to be a cheerleader and tell the kids exactly what they want to hear. If a kid said he wanted to be a rapist and murderer, should she encouraged him/her to do that? No. She is entitled to her opinion. People not agreeing with you is going to happen a lot in life. Better get used to it now.

Obviously the things I mentioned were metaphorical, symbolizing another profession a person might disagree with. Would it have been better if I said Mc Donalds Employee or Janitor? My point still stands and what was mentioned was example to back it up.

You need to look at things from another point of view besides your own.

Had this when i was at school too. Kept saying you won't be able to do anything if i leave and i can't leave. I proved them wrong

It sounds to me this this teacher wasn't offering advice but forming their own opinion then forcing it down Kas' throat and that really doesn't sound like what a teacher should be doing. Some have this weird idea that there is no route to happiness and a stable income except through college/university and that's simply not the case

There's a difference between cheering someone on and offering advice. You should never force your own opinion onto someone else. There was obviously a more tactical, adult way to approach him possible. His reaction to it proves it more than anything really...

I agree with this as well. So what if something you want to do doesn't work out? That doesn't mean you don't have other options, because you do! You just do whatever you feel capable of doing and don't let anybody talk you out of it!

Thanks everyone for your support and backing up. The fact that she had the nerve to say such things still pisses me off when I think about it.
