Have you ever been on a forum without any rules at all?

Was it a den of trolls?

How did they manage the chaos?

When I first joined Forum Promotion, I messaged this guy that had just joined and decided to support each other. He made me a moderator on his forum and I put him on staff on mine. I thought it was a great idea at the time... and I was very very wrong. He turned out to be a major troll. His forum had no rules. NONE. You could post whatever you wanted and therefor there was a ton of porn posted in his threads. Moderators on his forums had no powers what so ever. We might as well should have stayed members. Anyways, I got trolled really bad by one member and the owner, who I thought had my back, decided to troll me as well. Things ended badly. He and a few of his members came onto my forum and started trolling on there. I ended up banning him off of my forum and he banned me off of his. Anyways, a year later he ended up deleting his forum....so good riddance.

I've been on a few of them and on some of the troll forums just out curiosity. People just posting disgusting shock value stuff and saying mean things to each other gets old after a while. It becomes very tedious.

I've seen some forums do this very well and some forums do this very poorly. It all depends on the type of members they were trying to attract and where they were trying to recruit.

All forums will need to have some rules, though. For example, illegal content must be removed, or the forum will be in jeopardy.

You can start a forum with no rules but you must gradually implement at least some. general forums don't need as many.

Yes, a roleplay site. I joined and left. I prefer not to be on a site where no subject is taboo to write about and people do whatever they want.

Only as a lurker - and I knew immediately that it was a style of forum I would have no interest in.

I honestly don't think a no rules forum genuinely exists anywhere only that some forums write their rules down plainly while others decide to leave them a mystery that you will soon figure out depending on whether you break one of those unwritten rules or not. Then again, some of the forums that write their rules down plainly allow any and all staff to interpret them however they see fit which leads you to situations where you can honestly never really know what is or isn't against the rules because of that.

Indeed and sometimes they make it up as they go along. Or add a new rule every time something annoys them.
