So, has anyone heard of NodeBB, yet? It's a new forum software currently in early development stages that runs on the increasingly popular Node.js.

Have a look. Be sure to explore and digest the astounding loading speed, or more accurately, the lack thereof.

I have been growing increasingly fond of it, and am looking to what its future holds. Never have I been so tempted to stray from my 5-year favorite forum software, MyBB. It's very lightweight and packs on some magnificent features to boot, with a plugin library that's expanding rather quickly. My impression is that it shook off an entire decade of forum decay, feeling so modern and sleek.

Obviously, there are some downsides. The new minimalistic aesthetic may not appeal to everyone, and there's also the obvious fact that it's early in development and therefore subject to bugs. And probably the most prominent issue, the lack of compatibility with shared hosting.

To anyone that wishes to host a NodeBB forum, you will require a VPS or Dedicated hosting plan. As I mentioned, it runs primarily on Node.js, something that shared hosts have yet to implement.

Still, it's looking promising indeed. What are your thoughts?

I don't like it. It looks like a bunch of traffic signs, and it doesn't allow users to see what the latest reply in a forum is and who posted it.

Further note:

I hadn't even thought about "myspace" for MONTHS, until I made that post. So, I went and logged on and just checked it out.

My God. It sucks worse now than ever, in new and very creative ways. It was amazingly bad, busy, annoying, overrun with celebrities and 'suggestions', and just... well. Sucky.

For some reason, the good people at MySpace thought I wanted "Justin Timberlake" as a 'friend'.

Need I say more?

Never heard of it either. Aesthetically it is very unappealing (to me). Users obviously are having problems if you read the threads in the General Discussion area.

Oh, shut up. I like MySpace.

Aesthetics are quite modifiable, and there's already plugins available that make the addition of those features of last poster and such that some will probably sorely miss.

Although these following examples haven't particularly optimized their ends as well, they're still examples of what you can do with it.

It's pretty fluid with its customization. If one were willing to expend the effort, the more familiar traditional forum (albeit, a bit remixed) layout would be quite plausible.

Well, it is in very early development. :P

My giddnyess over its potential here is not in the default aesthetics (of which I am not overly fond of), which are something that can be configured to reflect a more likeable style, but in the sheer performance value and lightweight processing coupled with some very functional plugins and systems.

You have got to be kidding.

I think it would be alright if it had a familiar index page like we have here, not a fan of the boxes (with just the forum name on them).

I don't like it, and I'm pretty sure if any forum I'm on decided to switch to it, I'd stop using that forum.

I think they are going for a similar concept that other new options such as discourse are going towards. The interface doesn't really please me, but there is a market for that sort of thing.

I've been following it from a distance for some time now, and will be interested in seeing what happens.

Very interesting. Technologically at least, I'm rather inclined to agree with everyone else on the rest.
