A Nigerian man accused of trying to ignite an explosive on a Detroit-bound U.S. airliner on Christmas appeared before a judge for the first time Friday, against a backdrop of protesters who stood outside the courthouse waving American flags and denouncing acts of terror.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab's arraignment was brief — less than five minutes — and a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf. He said little, telling the judge simply that he understood the charges against him.

How the hell can he plead not guilty?!?! There is no doubt at all it was him and there was nearly 300 witness's.

If he was in front of 300 witnesses, why do they use the word suspect?

Who knows. Maybe he doesn't want to go to jail, and is trying his luck.

Suspect is the term they have to use until the final verdict is decided in court.

Shoot him... Won't do it again will he

Idiot. He'll be charged, no worry. Just pending the time in between the sentencing and his prison time to serve.

'The plea was entered on his behalf'

The judge entered the plea for him because he made no comment at all. Basically, AFAIK, you can get nailed for more time if you plead not guilty and then get slammed for it
