Do you think is it permissible for a debate to range far and wide from its original topic as long as it is civil and is carried on in something that could still answer to the breed specifications for a "academic discussion"?

Or

Should a debate in this section be restricted to a narrow discussion of the original topic.

Such as, if the Original Post and thread title say "banning domestic use of explosives for cooking", and somehow the discussion of the preparation of Deviled Eggs gets into talking about 'egg beaters' and related products, that the thread should be locked as getting too off topic.

I don't think any amount of industrial explosive will help the taste of the various brands of "fake eggs".

Now if you're talking military grade EO, then you might be on to something.
