CONCORD, N.C. -- Dick Trickle, the oldest driver to capture NASCAR’s Rookie of the Year title and a legendary racing figure from the nation’s heartland, passed away Thursday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to officials with the Lincoln County (N.C.) Sheriff’s office.

On a personal note.

I was covering the Dover race in 1990 when Trickle won the Pole for the Cup race running over 150MPH around the one mile oval.

He was a striking character, and will be missed.

And now, I am sitting here trying to remember if I met him personally or not.

... .. ... ... damn. I can't remember.

But that was a long time ago.
