This is a very tragic and sad story. It is not their fault, their pens were left open. These are wild animals, and this is what happens when they are held captive for human entertainment. It's very sad that these animal were shot instead of tranquilized and relocated. A lot of the animals that were shot and killed were still standing inside their open pens. That's murder to me and had nothing to do with public safety. This makes me so sad and also very angry.

Very sad update to this story:

At least three exotic animals are still on the loose after dozens escaped from a private preserve in Ohio -- including wolves, cheetahs, lions, tigers, and bears -- after police found their owner dead and cages left open. The Associated Press reports the sheriff suspects Terry Thompson committed suicide after setting the animals free. Most of the 48 or so wild creatures have been shot and killed. The Muskingum County sheriff issued a shoot-to-kill order to the deputies overnight, although some of the staff from the Columbus Zoo were also hoping to capture the animals alive. As a precaution, schools in the area canceled classes. Police said there have been multiple sightings along a nearby highway.
