These Crullers are like the ones that were made back in 1939.
And were displayed on a plate in the movie, The Wizard of OZ.

Old Fashioned Crullers

1 cup of sugar
2 egg yolks, well beaten
2 egg whites, beaten stiff
4 cups of flour
1/4 level teaspoon of grated nutmeg
2-1/2 level teaspoons of Calumet Baking Powder
1 cup of milk
1/4 teaspoon of salt

1.) Cream the sugar and egg yolks and add egg whites.

2.) Sift together thoroughly, the flour, nutmeg, baking powder, salt, and add alternately with milk to first mixture.

3.) Place on floured board, roll thin and cut in pieces three inches long, by two inches wide. Make four one-inch gashes at equal intervals.

4.) Take up pieces by running finger in and out of gashes, lower into deep hot fat and fry. Take up on a skewer, drain on brown paper, and roll in powdered sugar, if desired.

5.) Note: You can view a photo of an Old Fashioned Cruller below.

View additional photos below, from the movie, The Wizard of OZ.

Love me some Crullers and Wizard of Oz (I watch that movie like once a year).

I've always enjoyed the movie, but haven't made the Crullers yet, but one of these days I will prepare them. They surely would taste great with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate.

Let us know how you make out with them.
That reminds me that I need to install a receipt book here. :)
