Ive been on a few forums where some members only reply to the chit-chat thread or the random-chat thread or whatever the forum calls it. Usually its sticked in a General Chat forum.

These members will only reply to that one thread and never (or rarely) make any posts anywhere else. If nobody replies to them in that thread they will just sit there and wait or just log out while there is hundreds of perfectly good topics/discussions on the forum they are ignoring.

Why do some people only reply to that one thread?

Chit chat threads are good for asking how someone is and have a quick converstion. But those that just sit in there and in there alone, it's can get annoying not having them post elsewhere on the board.

A chit-chat thread is just a slower version of a shoutbox. The only difference is, is that there's post counts involved. I don't think it's a good idea to add a thread like that on your board when first starting out.

Its not slower here now that we have the live topics thing.

Some people either are afraid to come out and be judged by what they say or they are shy. I say if a member only wants to post in a chit-chat thread only then they have a right to do so. On the other hand, that member is missing out and other members don't really get to know them. To each their own

I tend to be the exact opposite.

I don't enjoy small talk in person or on forums.

And I don't care about running my posting count up so I don't do the threads dedicated to simply adding to your total.

So... is that OK Miss Jazzy the First, Tzar of all the Off Topixs? [bow, scrape, grovel]

it's probably not sticked as an announcement so no one goes there unless they go the General Chat forum as you mentioned. If it was around the board, everyone would've noticed it

I believe whether everyone goes in there or not, there should be a general chat area of the forum to cover what's not available in other areas of the forum. This way, when a user doesn't want to (or can't find topics) relating to the forums niche, the user will at least have a place to go and post.

Not everyone is socially adept and forum posting, especially on general chat threads, is a very good means of socialising for the shy, introvert or those perhaps with poor English language skills, simply because a forum does not neccessarily require immediate response.
If all someone can do is post "hello" in a chat thrad, perhaps that person is doing all what they can to express themselves - and really, that's fine by me, it's no skin off my nose !

Nicely said.

I personally love posting on forums. It's a great way to meet new people, develop friendships. However, I do see where someone may feel intimidated yet also want to be a part of the forum. General Chit Chat threads provide that! & who knows, if they feel comfortable enough, they may start posting more :)

Good point, its a great way to warm up before venturing out to the rest of the forum.

I am this type of person. I generally prefer in thread chatting and that is it. I am rarely interested in anything else and I have lost interest in post count farming.
