Do you own or rent your home?

I am currently renting a duplex myself.

I own my home outright.

Inheritance ?

That's correct. I bought the property and then had my log home custom built the way I wanted it. I also had a smaller log building built for my non-profit - no kill animal shelter.

If you don't mind my asking, why a log styled home? And we own our home.

I bought 23 acres of wooded property. I wanted to build a home that would be an astecially pleasing design. I looked into log home builders and fell in love with the look of the log homes. They look rustic and I knew right away that that's the type of home that would best fit my property.

Ohh I see! Thanks for answering!

@Sci: You're very welcome. What type of house do you live in?

Jazzy, what's the interior like? A regular house?

I live with my family in our owned house. In college, I live a dorm though, so that'd be rented.

My family rents.

I'll probably be renting too, when I'm on my own.

My parents own their house. My dorm room is rented.

Our home is rented, we can't afford to buy a house. However, my parents own thier home.

Thank you and that's exactly why I had my log home built. I just love all the exposed wood and beams. I also like the open floor plan on the lower level. All my bedrooms are upstairs in the loft area. I also have several tiered decks off the main house and one off the Master Bedroom. I wouldn't move from here for all the money in the world. Just love the privacy, the wooded property and my home.

Something like that is beautiful! I'm not a big fan of it, but I do like it quite a lot and the feel is very homely - I agree completely!

You must have one amazing home, Jazzy. So jealous!

I need to up my credit score a little bit before I can apply for a govt. loan. I have a few things in collections and I need to get those all to zero balances as well.

However, with the crappy economy and everyone that I had seniority over at work has been laid off, I don't think it would be a smart idea to buy a house right now. I'll just keep working on getting my credit good again and then make a decision in a year or two.

I suppose there is upsides to renting. I dont have to pay property taxes, I dont have to pay for anything that breaks (they send a maintenance man out to fix), water & garbage is paid by the landlord and they send out a gardener to take care of the front yard (I have to do the back though).

Good idea to hold off until you can clear up your credit and up your credit score. Unfortunately for you, in this crappy economy, it's a buyers market. Homes that are in foreclosure are selling well below the market value. Investors and first time home buyers (with good credit) are getting quite the deal.

Like you said, there are upsides to renting. There are also downsides as well. You're paying money each month for a place you don't own that could be put towards a mortgage payment. There's the possibility you get stuck with neighbors from hell. When I built my home, I made sure to build in an area where there are NO neighbors to pester me or not keep up their property which would lower the value of mine. Sure, I have expenses that a renter doesn't but I own my home. Nobody can take it away from me and I don't have to move because of a rotten neighborhood. It's worth the expense to me.
