So I saw some tweets recently where someone was complaining that paternity leave existed. For those of you that don't know it, paternity leave is paid leave for new fathers. It gives them some time off to spend with their new child and their partner to ensure they aren't doing all the work.

Do you think companies should offer paternity leave? And if not, why?

Yes, and in my state New Jersey they do, you can take up to 12 paid weeks off after your child is born or if your a caregiver or get sick. It's call the New Jersey Family Leave Act.

Yes! It's such a critical part of an infant's life those first several weeks. Mothers are physically healing during that time and hormones are completely out of whack and if she chooses to breastfeed that alone is very taxing. I think it's important for fathers to be able to support their family by being there during this important time to bond with baby and support/love its mother.

I'm in favor of it, good for the whole family, though I can see some business struggling with someone gone so long.

I like the model of some of the Nordic countries, where parents receive a certain amount of paid 'parental leave'. It is then their choice how to divide this, whether it is all taken by the mother, or by the father, split by both being off at the same time, or one being off followed by the other.

What are your thoughts about it?
I'm all for it, to be honest. It's something that my company offers so that's pretty great. I think the first few weeks after a child is born is a very important time for both parents so it's vital that they both can spend some time together with their newborn.

Even more important for new parents that don't have any previous experience of childcare.

I'm in favor of it. People work to support their families. This is just one of those things that happens.

I am all for it, wish they had this when we had our kids, in Canada fathers get 6 months.

Six months wow! Is that paid leave? ...or are they just guaranteed their job after the hiatus?

I think that paternity leave should be extended, like in the case of women. It can be a great help for women who have just delivered their babies.

I am in favor of having paternity leave. It's good that the father can also take care of the newborn baby.
