What is something people do to be polite but it actually turns out to be annoying?

Apologizing over small things constantly can become annoying and comes off insincere. That and the really big things. Not everyone comprehends what an apology really is. Their understanding goes as far as a two year olds definition. Its like telling you what you want to hear.

Things like customer service and the employee apologizes, they're not always on equal ground with their words.

I'm sorry sir, let me get you a manager

or if a customer at the store almost runs you over, than turns around and says, sorry but keeps going.

I just feel people shouldn't throw the word around if they don't really mean it.

Another one that really pisses me off  is when someone parks their vehicle really close to a person who can't get their baby out of the back seat since they are confined to a car seat. I mean just does it as you park. The woman or man than apologizes but doesn't move their truck or van yet says sorry and keeps on going. So that person has to move their vehicle to another parking spot to get their baby out.

Do not just apologize. Mean it, than perform the action to show if the option is there.

People thanking me at work. I'm doing it because I'm supposed to do it, not as a personal favor to you. :P

Talking to elderly people like they're children. This always makes me cringe so much, seeing the annoyance beneath their wrinkled eyelids. They're elderly, not retarded.
