We all know that PM advertising is a bad thing, but what should we consider PM advertising?

Like, If a long time friend shoots you a PM telling you to check out a forum, is that PM advertising?

I think there is a difference between sharing a link to a friend on a forum and PM Advertising. PM Advertising i think is someone on a board, joins up, does a few posts and PM's every member on the forum saying to join their forum.

I don't mind friends PMing each other links, but when it's a random number thats a no-no.

Well I suppose its all in how the member takes it. Its up to the member to report the PM as spam or not. If he or she comfortable with a friend sending them a link, then I suppose there is no problem. If he or she thinks its spam, then they should tell a staff member.

Some forums out there have PM-reader modifications installed and the admin can read all the PM's being sent by everyone. I suppose if the admin came across something like that, he might look at it as spam no matter if the two involved members didnt think so.

I don't see any reason for PM advertising between friends. If you are friends then you have each others email addresses. I have recruited my friends from other forums by sending them an email. I have in the past received PM's from members I did not know which included a link to their forum. I reported each and every one. How desperate can you be to get members that you use another forums PM system to recruit? Pretty desperate is the answer.

If someone sends me a PM saying, hey, check out my forum or so and so forum! I consider that to be PM advertising, even if it's not their own forum. PM advertising is frowned upon on almost every forum these days, but what really makes me mad is that I'm seeing some advertisement forums, especially newer ones, offering PM advertising as part of their promotion services! Honestly, do I really want to go on a forum, see that I have a PM, only to find that the staff is begging me to join someone's forum? Not particularly! There are plenty of other awesome services that don't involve mass PMing members, thank you very much!

I agree with what is being said. If a friend is telling you to join a site, then there is no problem with that. But a random person messaging me asking to join their site, that I consider unprofessional.
