PM defends 'tough' riot sentences

I'm still not convinced about the tougher sentences. The criminals need to be punished, there's no doubt about that, but giving them tougher punishments just to send out a message is in this case the wrong approach imo. You're dealing with a lot of bored, angry young people here, making them even more bitter towards a society that already left them in the cold is not going to do anyone any good. They need to be punished and deal with the consequences, but the punishment has to be right, fair.

Punishment's fair. You take away people's livelihoods, government takes away your life. Fair trade.

No one's questioning that however, just the severity of the punishment. As they said in the article, one week community service compared to 18 months of prison... That's absurd imo.

It's rather obvious that these sentences are being done so harshly because of all the criticism regarding how poorly they handled it. They are actually punishing the guilty for the government's incompetence by handing out excessive sentences which somehow in their world makes up for how poorly they attempted to handle the situation.

The point is that the situation should not have needed 'handling' because

it should not have happened in the first place.
